Ways To Save Energy At Home.

Many shoppers complain about high energy bills, but the funny thing is, it is very easy to reduce them. Cutting back on your power usage around the house can be as simple as implementing a few small changes to your behavior.

The following tips can immediately save energy around the home, and many of them cost absolutely nothing!

1. Unplug appliances when not using them

A massive 75% of the electricity consumption used to power electronic appliances occurs when they are turned off. Minimizing these “phantom loads” by unplugging appliances when not in use, or using a power board which you turn them off, can save 5-10% of your total energy usage.

2. Install LED lights

LED lights are becoming more popular because they are very energy efficient and long lasting. They can last 100 times longer than a standard light bulb and use much less power.

3. Make sure your appliances are energy efficient

When buying new appliances, be sure to select products that have a high energy star rating. While they may cost a little more, they can use between 20-50% less energy than conventional models, which will make up for your savings in no time.

4. Seal up any gaps

Small gaps or cracks around the house can result in air leaking out of and into your home. Sealing these up can save you up to 10% on your energy bills. Start with the windows and doors as these are notable air leaking areas, but if you’re really keen, call up an energy auditor to assess your home. Closing curtains also helps reduce drafts.

5. Turn down your thermostat

When it’s cold, we tend to heat ourselves up too much. And when it’s hot, we overcool ourselves. Having the room temperature at 19 degrees is pleasant, but when it’s freezing outside it’s easy to turn the heater up to 25. But turning the thermostat down by just 1 degree can result in 5% less energy consumption. A solar heating and cooling unit can also save significant energy.

6. Insulate your home better

Heating and cooling can contribute to over half of a household’s energy bills. Improving insulation in the floors, ceilings, walls and roof allows you to better control your home’s temperature, saving your significant dollars.

7. Reduce water consumption

Consuming less water will not only reduce your water bill, but less hot water will also reduce your gas or electricity bill. Taking shorter showers, washing and dishes and clothes only when you have a full load and generally being conscious of your usage will help you cut back. Installing a solar hot water system can also provide many energy saving benefits.
